Die Baird-Spitzmaus (Sorex bairdi) ist ein im Bundesstaat Oregon in den nordwestlichen Vereinigten Staaten endemisches Säugetier in der Gattung der Rotzahnspitzmäuse. Die Population galt zeitweilig als Synonym der Dunklen Rotzahnspitzmaus (Sorex monticolus), der Wanderspitzmaus (Sorex vagrans) oder des nicht mehr gültigen Taxons Sorex obscurus.cite-ref-wilson-1-0[1]

Das Tier ist nach dem US-amerikanische Zoologen Spencer Fullerton Baird benannt.cite-ref-beolens-2-0[2]

Merkmale

Die Art ähnelt der Wanderspitzmaus im Erscheinungsbild. Sie ist dagegen etwas größer und die oberen Schneidezähne driften nach unten hin auseinander, so dass sich eine Lücke ergibt. Mit einer Gesamtlänge von 100 bis 145 mm, inklusive eines 30 bis 65 mm langen Schwanzes und einem Gewicht von 5 bis 11 g ist das Tier auch größer als die Dunkle Rotzahnspitzmaus, jedoch kleiner im Vergleich zur Nebelspitzmaus (Sorex sonomae) und zur Pazifischen Sumpfspitzmaus (Sorex bendirii). Das braune Fell wird im Winter dunkler.cite-ref-kays-3-0[3]

Verbreitung und Lebensweise

Das Verbreitungsgebiet reicht vom Columbia River an der Grenze zum Bundesstaat Washington südlich bis zum Benton County und Lane County sowie vom Pazifik zur Kaskadenkette. Als Habitat dienen Nadelwälder mit einem Unterwuchs aus Sträuchern.cite-ref-iucn-4-0[4]

Die Baird-Spitzmaus sucht ihre Nahrung aus wirbellosen Tieren meist an Holzresten am Boden oder neben Steinen.cite-ref-iucn-4-1[4]

Gefährdung

Für den Bestand sind keine Bedrohungen bekannt. Die Art wird von der IUCN als nicht gefährdet (least concern) gelistet.cite-ref-iucn-4-2[4]
